Upper Room Theological University to Honor Distinguished Graduates Including Filmmaker Kenya Ware, Jazz Saxophonist Charles Langford, R&B Singer Howard Hewett, and Composer/Producer Leon Lacey

Upper Room Theological University proudly announces the distinguished selection of filmmaker Kenya Ware, celebrated jazz saxophonist Charles Langford, iconic R&B singer Howard Hewett, and renowned composer/producer Leon Lacey to receive Honorary Doctorates in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the arts, music, and cultural enrichment.

The honorary recognition will be presented by Upper Room Theological University during an official ceremony on August 8, 2026, at 6:30 PM at The Prestige Astoria Manor in Long Island City, NYC, celebrating these luminaries’ profound artistic achievements, influence, and dedication to creative excellence.

Dr. Carrie Cameron, President and CEO of Upper Room Theological University, shared: “Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding. Upper Room Theological University has expanded its Honorary Doctorate Degree Program to better serve citizens who have made outstanding community contributions and demonstrated meaningful impact in society.
Mary L. Collins, Vice President and Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, expressed: “It is our honor to recognize individuals whose work has not only elevated their respective disciplines but has also had a lasting cultural impact. Each honoree represents the pinnacle of artistic dedication and excellence.”

Dr. Tara S. Merchant, member of the Board of Trustees and Head of the Legal Department, added: “Honoring these artists reflects our commitment to celebrating those whose work not only inspires but also uplifts communities and shapes culture for generations to come.”
The Board of Directors includes Dr. Lazarus McKethan, Dr. Okpahrah Fennerson, and Janet Wells Rice, with additional representation from Dr. Joshua Race. Dr. Dominique Craddock serves as Honorary Advisor & Consultant for this program.
Regional Ambassadors supporting this prestigious event include Rev. Dr. Micheal Burke (New York City), Dr. Maurice & Elaine Patterson (Florida), and Dr. Gary & Francoise Slaughter(Atlanta).
Each honoree will receive an Honorary Doctorate in the Arts, acknowledging their exceptional creative achievements, artistic excellence, and significant cultural contributions.

This distinction reflects the University’s commitment to celebrating influential leaders and innovators in the creative and cultural communities.
